Special Alert Blog for StageMagazineOnline.com - What's Happening in Theater The Week of February 25, 2008

Friends,

Lots happening in Theater. Let's jump right in!

1) How Can A Blog Help Your Theater Reach Out To Interested Theater-lovers You Don't Even Know Yet?

In addition to last week's article telling you that Maribeth (our Reviews Manager) and I (as chief marketing officer) are spending time on your behalf in Social Networking, Social Bookmarking, and Content sites, I want to expand with one more thought.

Blogs are one of the most efficient means to get your information out to a HUGE audience of interested people because the software is loved by Google and other search engines, it automatically archives what you've written about (so people coming to your site long after the blog was "news" and is now "history" can still find it), and you can add interviews, photos, written material, links, and much more.

Here's what I created in conjunction with Act II Playhouse in Ambler: They are having a World Premiere of Brothers-in-Law in March. They held a press conference where The Philadelphia Inquirer, Ticket, and StageMagazineOnline.com were presented their playwright, director, and cast.

I was then granted the right to meet with their actors for a private, recorded interview.

Act II Playhouse then sends out this link to its entire list of friends and they get more mileage from the publicity. And because it appears on the StageMagazineOnline.com site where we benefit EACH theater because ALL of you are here (and the activity of the site tells Google that they should pay attention to us), we get much more activity from our blog than any one theater could possibly get from its own.

But however you do it, blogging is a great way to get your message out!

2) Community Theaters: Did you see this report in AACT's Spotlight?

American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) reports in its January - February 2008 issue what the most popular shows were at its member theaters over the past few seasons. They focused on Plays this issue and will touch on Musicals next issue.

And here are their top 15 in order of how many productions were produced at area theaters (see how many YOU have produced lately):

Proof, Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Over the River and Through the Woods, Over the Tavern, On Golden Pond, Arsenic and Old Lace, Noises Off, To Kill a Mockingbird, Steel Magnolias, Odd Couple, Sylvia, Diary of Anne Frank, A Christmas Story, Moon Over Buffalo, Lend Me a Tenor

Interesting mix, don't you think. No Shakespeare, where are all the other Neil Simon plays (I keep hearing people say, "we can only do Neil Simon or musicals to sell out our theater"), and some of these are as current today as when first written.

Oh, sure… most are comedies and there are a few "chestnuts" on the list, but look how Proof is number one.

So… you might want to check with AACT.org as you're planning next season to see what kind of results other theaters have experienced.
