Theater Special Alert - Week of April 28, 2008 - StageMagazineOnline.com

Friends,

1. This Season Is Nearly Over - How Is Your Marketing For Next Season?!

Look at all the openings we announce this week! Every theater is rushing to open a production just as their 2007 - 2008 season is coming to an end.

Oh, sure: Upper Darby Summer Stage hasn't even OPENED yet, and Les Mis at The Walnut Street Theatre will play long into the summer, but for most of our area theaters, the season is drawing to a close.

Are you announcing next season to your audience at each performance?

Are you making it EASY for people to purchase NEXT season's subscriptions?

Are you building on the success of your final production when encouraging your supporters to join you again next year?

Sure hope so. Let me know if you need a new idea or two!

2) Bristol Riverside Presents: Interview, Audio, and Video - Painlessly!

Early last week I visited with Susan Atkinson and Keith Baker at Bristol Riverside Theatre in Bristol, PA along the banks of the Delaware River. We spent about 15 minutes conducting a recorded interview which I then turned into both a podcast and a written intro-article.

I also had my playing-card-sized video camera with me and "set the scene" with an intro video.

Are YOU using "rich media" to support the work of YOUR theater? In today's Internet age where YouTube gets more eyeballs on it than just about any other site, I guess my question is Why AREN'T you using this if you aren't!?

3) InterAct Gets Kudos For Their Small Announcement Mailer For House Divided?!

I admit it: I'm pretty tough on some theaters that don't take their marketing seriously. Oh, sure… they SAY they take their marketing seriously, but then they produce the same materials year after year and wonder why their results don't change and they have so many empty seats (that's the definition of "insanity" right? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!)

If you don't have a copy of InterAct's House, Divided mailing, contact the box office to get one (and buy a ticket when you do). 215.568.8079 or email Josh Boden, Box Office Manager and tell him I sent you.

Measuring a mere 4.25" x 5 6/16" this may be the clearest, most engaging piece I've seen all season from any theater. Certainly inch for inch it's the most effective I've seen.

Why?

The graphic side makes sense - the title is a part of the graphic and there's is good, rich information on that side to engage you: "House Divided: Two Brothers. Two Sons. Divided by Faith. United by Blood." And with the star of David at the top of the flame of tongues from images of the two brothers, we instantly "get" what this is about.

And on the reverse, they don't waste space with all the dates of the production: they engage the prospective audience member with such words as "House, Divided is a challengng and timely examination of famly, faith, and politics and how the desire to distance ourselves from our past may only bring it closer to home in the future." Who says good copy doesn't work!?

It doesn't hurt that the setting is Philadelphia and we're told that the family is "torn apart" by the actions of the two brothers.

Bravo to InterAct, Seth, David, and your whole team. Go buy a ticket from them!
