The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater Presents The Girl with the Silver Eyes
For those who like their mysteries dark and their detectives
hard-boiled, The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is presenting /The
Girl with the Silver Eyes/. It's adapted from two short stories by
Dashiell Hammett (author of /The/ /Maltese Falcon/ and /The Thin Man/)
and features one of Sam Spade's early predecessors, the Continental Op.
In this thriller, the Op (short for operative) is not only solving the
mystery, he finds himself the subject of it. He gets kidnapped by people
who want to kill him…but he doesn't know why. Imagine solving your own
murder before it happens! And all the while, weaving in and out of the
tale is the mysterious woman for whom it is named.
This is not Director E. Scott Jones' first foray into the mystery genre,
he has staged several others at the Players Club of Swarthmore. Says
Jones, “I started looking for a play by my favorite mystery writer,
Dashiell Hammett.” Then he saw Terry Nolen's adaptation at the Arden,
and, “It has been on my 'someday to direct' list ever since.” Helping to
fulfill Jones' wish is his very capable cast (most of whom are making
their Players Club debut): Henry Newkirk of Wilmington, DE; Maria T.
Eldridge of Swarthmore, Daniel J. Cavanagh of Plymouth Meeting, Bob
DeMarco of Willow Grove, Beverly A. Trimboli of Drexel Hill, Hans Specht
of Rosemont and Edward A. Young of Hatfield.
