What do you get when you put a girl in a blue and white dress on stage with
a scarecrow, a tinman, and a cowardly lion and add a pop music beat? Not The
Wizard of Oz, but Upper Darby High School's production of The Wiz!

The exciting tempo of the show was quickly set with the Upper Darby High
School Orchestra as they played an overture of upbeat tunes alongside the
pit singers of the show, who sang underneath the songs backstage. The
lights dimmed, and the audience was reintroduced to the familiar characters
from the classic childhood tale.

Each actor delivered their part of the story with equal enthusiasm and
energy, thrilling the audience. It seemed that the energy of each performer
was unending. The energy in each scene increased dramatically until the
very last number that was delivered with such fervor, the audience was
almost ready to jump out of their seats and dance right alongside the
performers.

The famous group of friends did an excellent job portraying their characters
as they made their way to the Emerald City. The scarecrow, played by Guy
Mandia, handled his difficult vocals with expertise while the tinman, played
by Malik Muhammad, delighted the audience with his clever remarks.

One of the most impressive parts of the musical was Dan Matarazzo's
portrayal of the Wiz. Before he even entered the stage, the audience was
amazed by his incredible vocals. His impeccable characterization throughout
the show added even more flavor to the already enticing production.

Supporting characters throughout Dorothy's journey added to the colorful
production. Meghan Dietzler, who played Addaperle, the good witch of the
North, had the audience laughing at her silly magic tricks while Stephanie
Johnson as Glinda the Good Witch impressed the audience with her vocals.

While it could be overlooked, credit must be given to the six members of the
Yellow Brick Road, who were among the most energetic of the production.
Their stage presence alone lent zest to the show.

The technical aspects of the show were as well executed as the performance
itself. One of the most notable characteristics was the professional
quality LED backdrop designed and programmed by Owen Rocosky. Throughout
the show, its changing colors and patterns matched the mood of the
situation.

When producing a show such as The Wiz, it is nearly impossible to know what
to expect. Upper Darby High School's fun-filled production deserved nothing
less than the standing ovation it received, and it had all the audience
members ready to "Ease on Down The Road" by the end.
